JERSEY CITY, N.J. – U.S. Senators Bob Menendez, a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee that sets national health policy, and Cory Booker today announced that New Jersey’s 24 Community Health Centers (CHCs), operating 135 sites statewide, have been awarded a combined $129,653,750 in funding from the American Rescue Plan (ARP) to expand access to COVID-19 vaccines, treatment, and health services in hard hit, underserved and vulnerable communities across New Jersey. The ARP set aside $7.6 billion nationwide for CHCs, also known as Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs).
“When we passed the American Rescue Plan earlier this month, we said that help was on the way for New Jerseyans—and nothing matters more than the health and safety of our residents,” said Sen. Menendez. “With this unprecedented investment in our network of community health centers, I’m so glad to say that help is here to ensure our hardest hit communities and most vulnerable residents have access to the vaccines, treatment and preventative health services they need to stay healthy.”
“More than a year after the pandemic started, New Jersey’s health centers continue their tireless efforts to care for our state’s residents,” said Sen. Booker. “This new round of federal grant funding will help bolster their efforts and help ensure that they have the critical resources necessary to respond to the ongoing health crisis. I was proud to fight alongside Senator Menendez in getting the Rescue Plan signed into law to ensure our country and our great state has the resources needed to continue down the road to recovery.”
FQHCs across New Jersey can use the funding from the American Rescue Plan to expand COVID-19 vaccinations, testing, and treatment for vulnerable populations; deliver preventive and primary health care services to people at higher risk for COVID-19; and expand health centers’ operational capacity during the pandemic and beyond, including modifying and improving physical infrastructure and adding mobile units.

According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which administers CHCs, more than 91% of health center patients are individuals or families living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, and more than 60% are racial or ethnic minorities.
